The cell is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known organisms, meaning the smallest unit of life. Terahertz is an emerging technology and is known as the top ten technologies that will change the world in the future. Therefore, more and more attention has been paid to the theory and application of Terahertz technology in biomedicine. However, 90 percent of the weight of organisms are made up of water, which absorbs intensely the Terahertz. Fortunately, we noted that there are three weak absorption bands of electromagnetic waves by bulk water, indicating the possibility of modulation on the cell dynamics with limited thermal effect. Recently, we have proposed theoretically that Terahertz wave at a specific frequency, away from the intense absorption bands by bulk water, can modulate the dynamic processes occurring in the cell, including the phase transition of biological structure water and its super-permeation, the THz-induced enhancement of ions permeation across the ion channels, as well as the THz-induced acceleration of the unwinding process of DNA. The mechanism underlying is revealed to be the resonance between the Terahertz and the intrinsic vibration of a macromolecule.
