Communication, learning and decision making can be hindered when emotions are misinterpreted or not considered. Technology mediation in these and other human activities poses challenges for the inclusion of emotions in computer-supported environments. This talk presents an overview of affective computing, a field of study focused on the detection, interpretation, and processing of emotions, moods and sentiments. Recent advances are discussed with emphasis on applications for ambient intelligence and smart cities.
