Poverty is a common challenge faced by the whole world. China, as the world's largest developing country of 1.4 billion people, had long been plagued by wide-spread extreme poverty, and the task of poverty alleviation in China was almost beyond imagination. Yet, at its 100th anniversary this year, the Communist Party of China (CPC) has led the Chinese people to win a decisive battle against poverty in an unprecedented manner and scale in human history, 10 years ahead of the UN 2030 SDG timeline. China's experience in poverty alleviation showcases the leadership, courage, vision, sense of responsibility, and the aspirations to serve the people that are exactly characteristic of the CPC and the Chinese Government . With strong will and determination, as well as practical action, one can make steady progress towards overcoming poverty and realizing common prosperity.

Dr. Cheng Wu is Professor of applied linguistics and Director for International Affairs Office, Shanghai Normal University. He has had extensive overseas study experience. He earned his Diploma in Education at the National University of Singapore in 1990, MA in Teacher Training at the University of Warwick in 1997, Master in Public Management at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Harvard Kennedy School in 2009. He completed his PhD degree in teacher training at Shanghai Normal University in 2015. His main research area is in language teacher training, curriculum development, and applied linguistics.
